Cyrus

Cyrus led Ellis out of the boys’ room, doing what he could to calm her so that she wasn’t hysterical. She was panicking and seeing someone like that made it easy to get swept along. He didn’t want to wake the boys if Ellis was losing her mind with worry and panic.

It didn’t take too long—she seemed to find herself again rather quickly. As soon as she calmed, he walked to the children’s room. He sat on Wesley’s bed and carefully shook the boy by the shoulders. Wesley came out of a deep sleep with a grumble. The boy rubbed his eyes and blinked up at Cyrus.

“Wesley, son, Rox is gone,” he said. He watched as the knowledge sunk in and the boy’s eyes grew. “Do you know anything about it? Do you know where she might be?” He hoped they knew something. Children spoke to each other, didn’t they?

Wesley shook his head. “She went to bed when we did. I don’t know anything else. I’ve been asleep.” He looked over at Miles’s bed. “We’ve both been asleep.”

Cyrus nodded. Wesley’s eyes were large and he was starting to worry as well, he could see it in his son’s face. He didn’t need more panic.

“Let’s stay calm,” Cyrus said. “We’ll find her.”

“What’s wrong, Papa?” Miles asked, sitting up in bed. He blinked sleepy eyes at Cyrus.

“Rox is gone, little man,” Cyrus said in a calm voice. “I just wanted to know if you boys have seen her.”

Miles’s eyes widened as well, his mouth rounding in an O of surprise.

“She’s gone?” he asked in a small voice. “Why? Did something happen?”

Cyrus shook his head, trying to keep his voice calm and not work them up too much. He didn’t know if something happened to her, and that was the truth. He didn’t think it was anything as bad as someone coming in to take her—he and Ellis had been awake the whole time, after all; awake and fighting. But he couldn’t know for sure. All he knew was that Rox was gone and seeing that she was in his care the same way his own sons were, he felt responsible.

“Don’t you boys worry about it,” Cyrus said. “We’ll find her. You know we will, we always work together, don’t we?”

The boys both nodded.

“What can we do to help?” Wesley asked.

Cyrus thought for a moment.

“You can help us look through the house again, if you want to,” he said.

The boys barely listened to the end of the sentence before jumping up. Cyrus followed them out of the room. Ellis took the boys through the house again while Cyrus went to the barn and the stables to look for her there. He hoped he would find the girl asleep in the hay, but he doubted that would happen. Not if she had a bed that she could sleep in. Rox wasn’t the type of girl that would rough it.

When he got back to the house, the boys were sitting on their beds and they looked depressed.
